@Renfeld: Sorry man, had to edit… Opera spellchecker is not compatible with the editor module. I just create the post in swriter (open office) or word (M$ Office)… but hey! Nice post!

I agree that Women in entertainment have been pressed, if you will, into this pathetic mould forcing upon them one of two personas: Tough and unapproachable (IE Terminatrix, Laura crotch, Resident Boobil, etc.), Weak and useless (all other women in the entertainment biz) I guess Hollywood wants us to stop breeding because they constantly impose this belief that women should ALL be 5′ 9″, a buck ten, and ether so unbelievably stupid as to actually DESERVE a mercy killing (I’m reminded of Drew Barrymore in the intro for scream), or so unbelievably butch as to insinuate that ether A) you aren’t MAN enough to mate with one such as this (Angelina Jolie as Laura Croft), or B) you’re not WOMAN enough to ‘fake-mate’ with this bull-dyke (Michelle Rodriguez in Resident Evil).

Sorry for the crass descriptions, but frankly, yeah, as Renfield said, It’s there it’s done it’s real.

It's funny how, if a female character IS tough, it's hard to make it believable. Take Angelina's Lara Croft. Sure, she's entertaining, but not realistic (I mean her attitude and behaviors). Or that stripper girl in Independence Day. I'm sure some would see her behavior as natural, but I didn't. So far, the only believable female tough-guy that I can think of is Linda Hamilton's Sara Connor. For some reason, Linda Hamilton makes it believable to me. And maybe Carrie Fisher (not just Star Wars, but The Burbs, too)... but maybe I'm just old-school.

I just thought of another believably tough female character... the witch in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. She did a good job (believable, I mean).

Now that I think about it, I think it's less about behavior and more about acting ability. I think if a female character has superb acting ability, they can portray anything from really tough to screamy pansy. But that's just my opinion.

Still, I'd get pretty annoyed also, if a bimbo just screamed at everything during the whole movie. I'd start HOPING she'd get shot/eaten/cut/burned/assimilated/whatever. It's not good to make a "good-guy" character that people want to see die. :)
